Telekomunikasi akan bergerak dari sistem paket data dan voice konvensional ke arah komunikasi terpadu berbasis teknologi Ethernet. Seiring dengan evolusi itu, Nokia-Siemens Networks bekerja sama dengan Juniper Networks mencari cara untuk mengoptimalkan revenue dalam operasional jaringan. Acara yang digelar pada tanggal 15 Oktober lalu di Hotel Shangri-la Jakarta ini menghadirkan berbagai teknologi baru dalam menghadapi tantangan IP-based communication dan mendemonstrasikannya secara langsung. Permasalahan terbesar adalah bagaimana cara operator menarik dan mempertahankan pelanggan, serta bagaimana membentuk jaringan yang efisien, serta bagaimana memastikan kesiapan bandwidth untuk menerapkan layanan berteknologi baru.
Jawaban dari semua tantangan tersebut adalah Carrier Ethernet, dan implementasinya di Indonesia sudah dimulai karena NSN Juniper Networks bekerja sama dengan operator yang terkenal di Indonesia, salah satunya adalah Telkomsel. Integrasi Carrier Ethernet dan IP-based-communication secara lengkap memerlukan paket infrastruktur yang dimulai dari perencanaan serta desain , yang ditangani oleh ASPEN, NetAct Transport management software, sebagaimana dijelaskan oleh Alin Nanu, Solutions Architect untuk Nokia Siemens Networks, juga ada teknologi Photonics, yaitu pengoptimalan jalur fiber-optic yang sudah ada sebagai penyokong utama jalur data bagi operator, dan juga pengaturan Quality of Service yang lebih baik, sehingga operator mampu mengoptimalkan penggunaan bandwidth serta layanan bagi pelanggan.
Spesifik mengenai teknologi Photonics, dijelaskan lebih lanjut oleh Mike Adams, Head of Sales Broadbang Connectivity Solution APAC: NSN Juniper menerapkan teknologi maju yaitu DWDM, atau yang dikenal dengan Multi-layer Optimization untuk kabel fiber-optic. Dengan menggunakan cahaya yang berbeda spektrum dan warna, kecepatan jalur data bisa ditingkatkan secara signifikan. Kecepatannya diklaim bisa mencapai 100Gigabit per detik.
Apabila operator yang bersangkutan mengalami kendala dengan pengkabelan darat, NSN Juniper juga memperkenalkan point-to-point wireless microwave yang dinamai Flexi Packets, dan bisa mengakomodasi data hingga 1Gigabit per detik.
